Mathys Tel: Tottenham move rejected by Bayern Munich forward after £50m deal agreed - Sky in Germany

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has rejected a move to Tottenham after the clubs had agreed a £50m deal, according to Sky in Germany.

The 19-year-old is not ruling out staying at Bayern after indicating he wanted to leave the German giants earlier this week, according to Sky in Germany.

They are reporting a number of Premier League clubs are interested in the teenager with Aston Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United keen on the France U21 international, who is more open to a loan deal.

Sky in Germany reported Tel's future will depend on if the forward is convinced by the projects on offer.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl told Sky in Germany on Friday morning: "It's also about generating transfer revenue. Mathys is an incredibly sought-after player.

"Whether it will be a loan or a sale, we will discuss it in the coming days and hours."

"Will we make any more moves? Regardless of the money, our squad is very well set up."

There is also interest in the ex-Rennes attacker from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, who are managed by German Matthias Jaissle.

Manchester United have made tentative enquiries about Tel. However, any potential deal is likely to depend on departures at Old Trafford with interest in Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

Spurs, meanwhile, had been hoping more regular game time would persuade Tel to join them over others.

Tel's rejection is a blow for Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who also missed out on Randal Kolo Muani earlier in the window after he opted to join Juventus on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Sky Sports' Paul Merson on The Transfer Show:

"I wouldn't say it's embarrassing for Spurs. He's coming from Bayern Munich, he's not coming from a lesser team. No disrespect to Tottenham, but he's coming from a huge team. He's got to get the right move.

"At the moment, Tottenham are 15th. If they were right in the top four, he would come.

"The embarrassing thing is Spurs would have had a rough idea that they could get him. When these deals happen, there's a lot of talking beforehand and they would have spoken to Tel or their agent - a lot is done behind the scenes before an offer goes in. They would be shocked with that, I reckon."

Sky Sports' Clinton Morrison on The Transfer Show:

"Tottenham need to do business. They have so many injuries at the moment, it's a struggle and Ange Postecoglou is under huge pressure.

"They need to start winning football matches and they're still in two cup competitions. That's probably why he's still in his job - because of the cups. The run they've been on is terrible and they need to do business.

"You can't have Solanke, your main striker, out for six weeks. Richarlison is back but he picks up injuries. They need a player who can play in all those three positions across the front line."

Latest from Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge:

Tottenham are in advanced talks with AC Milan over a move for ex-Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori.

One source has told Sky Sports News that the England international is yet to agree to the move.

Spurs are looking to add a defender before Monday's 11pm deadline, and the 27-year-old is one of a number of options the club are looking at.

Sky Sports' Nick Wright:

Tel has been a peripheral figure for Bayern Munich this season, playing only 344 minutes across their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns without scoring. But at 19, he remains a thrilling talent with plenty to offer and plenty of room for improvement.

He demonstrated his immense potential last season, contributing nine goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League, despite mostly featuring as a substitute, and averaging an eye-catching 1.15 goal involvements per 90 minutes.

Context is important, of course. Many of those substitute appearances came at points in games where Bayern were already several goals up. But his talent is not in doubt. It is what convinced Bayern to pay roughly £23m to land him at the age of only 17 in 2022.

Tel is quick, strong in the air and, crucially, an accomplished finisher. His versatility is another asset.

As shown in the graphic above, Tel's minutes at Bayern have been split across different positions. He has played the highest share of minutes on the left, where he is able to cut in on his right foot. But he is also adept with his left foot and has been used on the right, as a central striker, and even in midfield.

He would have to adapt to new surroundings in the Premier League, of course. Hitting the ground running would be a challenge mid-season. But it is easy to understand the interest, even if he would not come cheaply to any side looking to sign him permanently.
